The Fall (Adaptation)

THE FALL
AN ADAPTATION OF ISRAEL HOROVITZ’S ONE ACT PLAY, THE ACROBATS
by BJ Crisostomo
_____________________________________________________________________________¬¬¬

Characters:
From original text
MAN, a professional acrobat
WOMAN, a professional acrobat

As conceived by Crisostomo
TOM, a high school boy; lover to Lisa
LISA, a high school girl; lover to Tom
BERNARDO, a tricycle driver; lover to Emma
EMMA, a housewife; lover to Bernardo

Setting:
It is useless to describe the setting as conception comes only from the womb of the mind where abstract realities are more real than actual reality. And this play is a conception of falling out of relationships or simply a metaphor of the fragile nature of love—perhaps also of learning—still I will try.
Though the original play is set in a circus where the acrobat husband and wife, henceforth called MAN and EDNA, are performing their act, the script will take them to the heights of the stage in harnesses. The high school couple are fucking or learning how to fuck in the stairwell of an abandoned building. EMMA and her husband are found cooking in their kitchen. These are loose places that are more of symbols than tangible settings.

Notes on Staging (just for the director):
• The play is a metaphor on love not on bitterness.
• It is still a one act play.
• Understand most of all that WOMAN and the MAN still love each other though the trappings of dependency, gambling and proximity has taken them apart.
• This is a modern tragedy.

(The play opens. Characters enter on stage with a dance which is not really a dance. They came with their beloveds. First, the high school couple who run towards the stairs—touching, teasing and titillating. Then the cooking couple, they bring their ingredients; banging and throwing them, they create the beat of this movement. After which comes the Acrobats who slowly walk to their harnesses, taking their time and then hoisted up to the top with a jerked motion. Finally, the narrator comes, looking at his past, present and future. He plays the guitar.)

MAN:
(Simply, sternly, flatly)
I want a divorce.

LISA:
Are you sure about this?

TOM:
Yes. Wala nang gumagamit ng lugar na ito.

LISA:
Hindi. I mean are you sure about us?

WOMAN:
(An arch whisper)
My hand let it go.

EMMA:
Huwag.

BERNARDO:
Huwag ano?

EMMA:
Huwag mo isalang yung silyas kaagad. Madali masunog yon.

BERNARDO:
Alam ko ginagawa ko.

MAN:
I want a divorce.

TOM:
(Didilaan ang leeg ng babae)
Don’t move so much.

BERNARDO:
Alam ko ginagawa ko.

LISA:
(Forces her partner away)
My hand let it go.

MAN:
Can you do it? Are you sure you can do it?

WOMAN:
Don’t be ridiculous.

MAN:
I’m here don’t be frightened.

EMMA:
Tinuturuan ko lang naman ng tama.

BERNARDO:

LISA:
Ano yon?

TOM:
What?
(Struggling to unstrap EMMA’s bra)

LISA:
Tumigil ka nga muna. May narinig ako.

TOM:
It was nothing.
(Now touching LISA’s breasts)

BERNARDO:

LISA:
Didn’t you hear that?

TOM:
No. Stop worrying.

MAN:
I’m here don’t be frightened.

WOMAN:
I’m alright.

MAN:
Tell me when.

WOMAN:
Okay.
(After a long hold)
Now!
(He pauses, smiling)

MAN:
Which? Which hand? You didn’t tell me. Which hand?

WOMAN:
This one.

(WOMAN flings herself away from her husband. She does a complicated move. The MAN is dumbfounded, watching his wife.)

MAN:
(Slowly, sternly)
I hate your guts WOMAN I swear. I really hate your guts WOMAN.

LISA:
I’m not sure if I want to go that far.
(Stops BERNARDO’s hand which is currently reaching for LISA’s crotch)

TOM:
Four months na tayong mag-on.

LISA:
We’re still in high school.

TOM:
Does that really matter?

LISA:
I told you before. I’m not that kind of girl.

TOM:
And you also told me that you trusted me—that you loved me.

LISA:
Yung boobs ko muna.
(Thinking about it)
Mamaya na lang.

BERNARDO:
Ok?

EMMA:

BERNARDO:
Lumalapit ka pa sa Daddy mo?

WOMAN:
Your hand.

MAN:
Here.

(They do a trick. They land smiling.)

BERNARDO:
(Pumapalakpak)

WOMAN:
Who is it?

WOMAN:
Minsan lang naman.

BERNARDO:
Sinasabi mong hindi kahit minsan.

LISA:
You told me we’re not going to take this too far. Not yet.

TOM:
But we have the opportunity.

WOMAN:
Pag kailangan lang.

LISA:
You promised.

BERNARDO:
Nangako ka.

TOM:
Just this once.

EMMA:
Minsan lang yun!

MAN:
Nobody. Don’t be ridiculous. There’s no one else. You like that wouldn’t you? If there was someone else. Sorry WOMAN. There’s nobody else.

TOM:
Just this once.
(Forces his hand to LISA’s crotch)

LISA:
Just this once.

EMMA:
Wala namang pera panggamot.

BERNARDO:
Minsan lang naman.

WOMAN:
(After a silent hold)
Ready?

MAN:
(A military reply)
Ready.

(WOMAN climbs up her husband’s shoulder; gives a wry smile to the audience.)

WOMAN:
Thank you. Thank you.

MAN:
I want you off my ass, woman. I’ve got a life of my own. You wouldn’t understand that. Ready?

(They change positions in an amazing move so that he is now standing up on his wife’s back.)

WOMAN:
Lover.

(He steps down lower on her back.)

MAN:
Sorry.

WOMAN:
It’s alright.

BERNARDO:
Ok lang. Huwag mo nalang ulitin.

EMMA:

BERNARDO:

EMMA:
Puta. Sige.

(Babalik sa pagluluto ang mag-asawa.)

TOM:
It’s getting hot.

LISA:
Not too deep.

TOM:
Is this your first time?

LISA:
There. Touch me there.

TOM:
Where?

LISA:
(Guides TOM’s hand)
Dito.

TOM:
Do you feel good? Masarap ba?

LISA:
Oo.
(Uungal)

TOM:
Wag ka masyadong maingay. Somebody might come.

LISA:
Stop! Don’t go in!

TOM:
Sorry.
(Will take away his finger from LISA’s crotch)

LISA:
Your first time?

TOM:
Oo.

LISA:
I have a confession to make.

TOM:
Ano?

LISA:
Hindi ikaw ang unang boyfriend ko.

TOM:
Okay lang. I need you too much.

BERNARDO:
Kita mo.

BERNARDO:
Patapos ka na ba riyan?

LISA:
Malapit na.

BERNARDO:
Kita mo. Match-made-in-heaven.

TOM:
I need you too much.

MAN:
(Walking tiptoe up her back until he stands triumphantly on her shoulders)
Dependency! Woman. Pushing and pulling. I can’t fill my life this way.

TOM:
Come closer.

He whispers something to LISA’s ear. They laugh.)

BERNARDO:
Ihalo na natin.
(Ihahalo ang pagkain)

MAN:
… so little time alone—so little time with you. Demanding, pushing, pulling, it’s gone way beyond. I’m a laughing stock. I’m a jerk old. I can’t decide who I hate more, me or you.

LISA:
Really? You do?

TOM:
Of course I do.

LISA:
One more time. Whisper to me one more time.

(TOM does. They laugh.)

BERNARDO:
Ang bango.

EMMA:
Tikman mo. Masarap yan.

BERNARDO:
Oo nga. Masarap!

EMMA:
Tawagin mo na ang mga bata.

BERNARDO:
Ayusin mo na ang hapag.

WOMAN:
Ready?

MAN:
Ready.

(The MAN tosses WOMAN up. She does a mid-air summersault. TOM and LISA claps while they laugh.)

LISA:
A few months ago I wouldn’t even talk to you.

EMMA:
(BERNARDO claps)
Ang galing talaga natin, missis.
(BERNARDO goes up the stairs)
Mga anak, luto na hapunan. Bumaba na kayo.

TOM:
Ano yun.

LISA:
‘Di ko alam.

TOM:
Ayusin mo na panty mo.

LISA:
Tara.

(They run up.)

BERNARDO:
Huwag makulit. Pagtinawag bumaba kaagad.

LISA:
Huwag ka maingay.

(Hahabulin ni BERNARDO sina LISA at TOM. Mahuhuli sila.)

EMMA:
Natawag mo na ba mga bata?

TOM:
Huwag mo kong hawakan.

BERNARDO:
Huwag kang makulit.

LISA:
We weren’t doing anything, sir.

BERNARDO:
Halika na.

TOM:
I have money. I’ll pay you.

LISA:
My dad is a senator.

EMMA:
Kain na mga bata.

LISA:
We weren’t doing anything.

TOM:
We were just talking.

WOMAN:
Just tell me when.

MAN:
Why not tonight? Right now.

WOMAN:
Ready?

MAN:
Lead.

WOMAN:
Now!

(He falls on to his back again. She dives into the air—falling into a handstand on his shoulders. His hands are on her shoulders. WOMAN splits in midair.)

MAN:
Watch your nails.

WOMAN:
Sorry.

MAN:
It’s alright?

WOMAN:
What about the twins? What will I tell them? Huh? What words?

MAN:
Split up.

LISA:
I told you, mahuhuli tayo.

TOM:
Pumayag ka.

BERNARDO:
O sige.
(Habang inaayos ang lamesa)
Aakyat na kami ng mommy mo.

EMMA:
Tara Bernardo.
(May libog sa boses niya)
Gawin niyo homework niyo ng maayos. Matulog kayo ng maaga.

(Aakyat sina EMMA at BERNARDO.)

LISA:
What are we going to do now?

TOM:
We wait.

LISA:
Sige. What am I going to tell him? Dad, nahuli kami ni Tom na nakikipag-sex. Ano gagawin noon? Ang alam lang niya study partner kita.

TOM:
Wala na tayong magagawa, Lisa.

LISA:
It’s all your fault.

TOM:
Ok! It’s all my fault. Ok!

LISA:
We have to break up.

MAN:
Split up. They’re better off with us split up. I swear to God. How do you think they feel? Us fighting all day, all night? Huh? How do you think they feel.

WOMAN:
I know how they feel believe me. I’ve talked to them.

MAN:
(Amazed, rather angry)
You’ve had words with the twins?

WOMAN:
You think they’re blind? You think they can’t see? They see. Ready?

MAN:
Ready.

(He leaps precisely as she jumps backwards. He falls forward and she leaps off his back. She quickly does a headstand on his back as she bends forward.)

BERNARDO:
Matagal na natin itong hindi ginagawa.

EMMA:
Masyado ka kasi madalas uminom. Pag-uwi mo, tulog na ako.

BERNARDO:
Huwag nating pag-usapan yon.

(Susubukang halikan si EMMA. Tatanggi si EMMA.)

EMMA:
Sino ba ang kainuman mo?

BERNARDO:
Gusto mo talagang sirain ito.

EMMA:
Aabot rin naman tayo diyan. Sagutin mo muna ako.

BERNARDO:
Emma.

EMMA:
Bernardo.

BERNARDO:
Ah sige.

EMMA:
Sige, bawat tanong kong sasagutin mo, maghuhubad ako ng isang piraso ng damit.

LISA:
We have to stop this. Do you know that our educations are on the line.

TOM:
We’re just in high school.

LISA:
We are in expensive private high schools. What do you think the Jesuits in your school would say when they find out you were—

TOM:
Ok. But that doesn’t mean we have to split up. Isang problema lang, susuko ka na agad.

LISA:
Isang malaking problema.

TOM:
Problemang kayang lusutan.

LISA:
Ng daddy ko.

TOM:
Ng daddy mo.

LISA:
O sige, tatawag na ako.

TOM:
Yon.

LISA:
But we still have to break up.

TOM:
Stop it.

LISA:
You stop it.

WOMAN:
Okay?

MAN:
Perfect. Okay for you?

WOMAN:
Perfect. Down a little?
(He wriggles a bit)

MAN:
Who is he?

TOM:
Sino yung dati mong boyfriend?

WOMAN:
Sino kainuman mo?

WOMAN:
We’ve had that out.

LISA:
Di mo naman siya kilala.

BERNARDO:
Mga brad ko. Hubad.

MAN:
Well it ain’t out of me believe me. I’m a laughing stock, a clown, a freak.

WOMAN:
I won’t get into that with you again.

MAN:
The truth. You wouldn’t know the truth if you fell on it.

WOMAN:
On dead ears. Your lies are falling on dead ears?

MAN:
Ready?

WOMAN:
Ready?

(They both leap at the same time and stand facing the audience again. They smile, holding hands.)

EMMA:
Sige.
(Huhubarin ang blouse niya)
Number two. Sino pang kasama mo?

BERNARDO:
Emma, wala na akong ibang kasama.

EMMA:
Sige.
(Maghuhubad ng pambaba)
Hawakan mo ako.

(Lalapit si BERNARDO. Hahawakan ang katawan ni EMMA. Lilimasin ito. Haharap si EMMA sa mga manonood. Umiiyak siya.)

LISA:
When I got to know you, I broke up with him. I told him to get out of my life.

TOM:
Ginagago mo ba ako?

LISA:
Hindi. I’m telling the truth.

TOM:
No. Na ako ang first time mo.

LISA:
Hindi naman importante kung sino ang first time. Simple at totoo?

TOM:
Sige. Let’s break up.

MAN:
What did you tell them?

WOMAN:
That you might be moving alone.

WOMAN:
(Sa init ng pagtatalik)
Sige pa. Sige pa.
(Umiiyak, nakaharap sa manonood)

LISA:
Sure.

BERNARDO:
Lagi dapat ganito. Nagmamahalan.

TOM:
Aalis tayong mga strangers. Don’t text me. Don’t go to my school. Don’t even try to meet me again.

WOMAN:
Alone.

MAN:
Lies.

WOMAN:
They asked me twice. I had to tell them the truth.

MAN:
They’re too young. Too young to know. There’s time. They’ll know in time. I really hate your ass, woman.

WOMAN:
Now.

(Their harnesses fall to the ground. They stand triumphantly.)

LISA:
Look the vent’s open.

TOM:
Baka makasingit tayo riyan.

LISA:
Subukan natin.

(They try to climb up the ropes.)

TOM:
Hindi ako kasya.

LISA:
You know, I really did love you. It’s just that I’m not willing to gamble as much as you.

TOM:
Do you really blame me for what happened? Mutual naman yung decision ‘di ba?

LISA:
No.

BERNARDO:
Mahal kita.

EMMA:
Ako lang?

BERNARDO:
(Tatayo at magdadamit muli)
Akala ko tapos na tayo riyan.

EMMA:

MAN:
Lies! I can’t walk anywhere… do anything… without people laughing. I’m funny to people. Funny. A laughing stock, a clown, a freak. Everybody knows.

WOMAN:
I can’t go into that with you. You want to leave, leave. You want to stay, stay. But I can’t get into that with you. You understand? (Pauses) Ready?

MAN:
Ready.

(Their harnesses are pulled back up.)

WOMAN:
I don’t need you.

TOM:
Then why break. I can forget your other lover. Kaya kong kalimutan ang tapos na.

LISA:
But what do we do about this?

TOM:
I don’t know. But I need you.

MAN:
I hate you.

WOMAN:
I hate you more.

(They hold each other in a dance.)

MAN:
I wish I could drop you, Edna. I could you know. Just like that. (Snaps his fingers) I just might Edna. I just might.

BERNARDO:
Tama na.

EMMA:
Ayoko na.

LISA:
I don’t want to but I’m afraid of falling because of you. Tom, we have our whole lives ahead of us. I can’t just keep hanging around you.

BERNARDO:
Alam mo naman na hindi ako nagsisinungaling. Hindi ba? Kelan ba ako nagsinungaling sa’yo. Emma, mahal kita.

TOM:
Why can’t you understand na one time thing lang ito. This will never happen again.

WOMAN:
Bullshit. Pure and simple bullshit.

EMMA AND LISA:
Bullshit.

BERNARDO:
Kelan ka pa natutong magmura ng inggles?

EMMA:

BERNARDO:
Emma, pumayag ka na rito. Emma, Kasal tayo.

TOM:
We’re in this together, hindi ba?

WOMAN:
Bullshit.

MAN:
You’ve got a rotten mouth.

WOMAN:
I never really did, ‘til I got stuck with you.

MAN:
Really? Oh really. You know what I wish? You know what I wish? I wish you were dead. I swear to God. That’s what I wish. I wish I could drop you.
(She leaps onto his back.)
I wish I had t6he guts to leave, that’s what I really wish.

WOMAN:
Ready?

MAN:
Ready.

(She leaps from his back landing on his hands. And he walks her around, holding her feet so the form
a beserk see-saw.)

TOM:
It was just a one time thing. Lightning never strikes twice at the ame place.

BERNARDO:

TOM:
We have a good time when we’re around each other, don’t we. I mean, nag-aaral pa nga tayong magkasama. Pa’no mo naman masasabing, this relationship is bad for us?

BERNARDO:
Magiging maayos ang lahat, Emma. Magtiwala ka lang sa akin.

MAN:
I really want you off my back.

WOMAN, EMMA, LISA:
No!

WOMAN:
No.

EMMA:

LISA:
Yes, and the good times are over. Tapos na, Tom. Anon a lang mangyayari sa atin pagkatapos nito?

WOMAN:
You want to leave, leave. You want to stay, stay.

MAN:
I hate you Edna. I really hat you.

WOMAN:
You said it already. You don’t have the courage to leave. Coward.

MAN:
I hate you. I mean it. I mean it. You’ll see after I’m gone. You’ll see. Who’s gonna tell you when to move? When to think?

BERNARDO:
Kailangan kita. Anong gagawin ko kung…

TOM:
Think it over first. You don’t have to do it now. The door’s open, no one’s watching.

WOMAN:
Now!

(They leap into their forced position and smiling.)

MAN:
Who I want when I want.

WOMAN:
Now!

MAN:
“That I was moving alone.” How dare you.

TOM:
Now! Run!

(They run back up.)

BERNARDO:
Ano nanaman ngayon, Emma. Wala nga. Ikaw lang ang mahal ko.
(Sinusundan si EMMA na bumababa.)

EMMA:
Bitawan mo ako.

TOM, BERNARDO:
Move on!

(Madadapa si LISA. Titigil si EMMA ng umiiyak. Magtitinginan sila.)

EMMA, LISA:
Hindi ko kaya.

LISA:
I have to end it now! (Far from danger)

TOM:
Go. If you really want to, go ahead.

WOMAN:
What should’ve I said, that you wanted a divorce?

TOM:
Stop lying to yourself that you’re going to do it if you can’t. Leave if you want to.

BERNARDO:
Ano gusto mo gawin ko? Pigilan ka. Kung ayaw mo magpapigil, huwag.

MAN:
Who said that? I never said that.

(Mapupuno na ang dalawa.)

TOM:
Stop.

BERNARDO:
Tama na.

MAN:
Who said that? I didn’t say “divorce”! Not me. I hinted maybe but I never said that. Not divorce. Not me.

EMMA:
Hindi ko na kaya, Bernardo.

LISA:
I can’t do it anymore, Tom.

WOMAN:
(Showing emotion now)
I said… I was the one who said… I said… divorce.

MAN:
When?

WOMAN:
In my mind. I said I want out. I said I want away from you.

BERNARDO:
Kaya natin ‘to gawan ng paraan. Hindi na ako iinom.

LISA:
Adik ka na Bernardo. Wala na akong magagawa roon.

BERNARDO:
Ako na nga nangangako ditto.

LISA:

BERNARDO:
Huwag.

LISA:
Ok. But there are rules.

TOM:
Ok.

LISA:
You don’t get to touch me anymore. Never.

TOM:
(Stops)
Never.

LISA:
NEVER.

MAN:
You’re crazy, you know that? How are you gonna manage the twins without me? What are you gonna do? Tell me that.

EMMA:

BERNARDO:
Huwag!

EMMA:
Hindi kita papatayin. Hindi ko kaya. Tanong. Huling tanong. Kelan ka tumigil na mahalin ako?

WOMAN:
I don’t care. That’s what I got to tell you. I slave for what? I put supper on the table, you don’t eat it. You eat it and you don’t like it. If I don’t put supper on the table you’d starve. Why? Because you’re too dumb to get your own supper.

EMMA:
Alam mo wala na akong pakialam.
(Mahuhulog ang kutsilyo, iiyak)

LISA:
It’s not like you’d follow though. You’re just a boy. Just like my old boyfriend. Kantutan lang naman ang pakialam mo.

TOM:
No. That’s not true.

LISA:
Are you sure?

TOM:
Yes.

LISA:
Really.
(Will undress)
Tell me your cock is not up.

TOM:
Don’t tempt me Lisa.

MAN:
Up your ass, woman.

WOMAN:
Ready?

MAN:
Ready.

(She leaps forward and he leaps on her back.)

WOMAN:
Get out. Just get out. But don’t tell anybody you left me, because I’ll tell them all the truth.

BERNARDO:
Lisa, walang iba.

EMMA:
Bernardo, alam ko naman. Gusto ko lang na mahalin mo ako. Gusto ko na umuwi ka ng maaga. Gusto ko na piliin mong makakasama ako.

BERNARDO:
Sige.

TOM:
Sure, nalilibugan ako but there’s more to that.

LISA:
There’s more to what?

MAN:
What truth?

WOMAN:
That I threw you out. Threw you right out.

MAN:
The hell you threw me out. I left.

TOM:
More to the libog.

EMMA:
Tama, ako hindi ba Bernardo?

LISA:
Yeah right.

WOMAN:
No chance.

LISA:
(Slowly undresses.)
Are you sure you’re not horny? Are you sre. Sigurado ka ba, Tom. Hindi ba tumitigas yang-yang…

EMMA:
“Mahal kita. Mahal kita.” Paulit-ulit na “mahal kita”.

TOM:
Please, Lisa, be reasonable.

—page 17 missing—

TOM:
But can’t we spend them together?

WOMAN:
Bullshit. Pure, plain and simple bullshit.

MAN:
You’ve got a rotten mouth.

WOMAN:
I’ve never had. Never had a rotten mouth ‘til I got stuck with you. I’ll tell you that.

BERNARDO:
Kasal tayo, Emma. Hindi mo ako pwedeng iwanan.

EMMA:
Hindi ko alam sa ‘yo.

BERNARDO:
We make a great team.

TOM:
We are a couple.

WOMMAN:
I wish I could drop you. I want a divorce.

MAN:
Really? Oh really. You know what I wish? I wish you were dead. I swear to God that’s what I wish. I wish I could drop you, that’s what I wish. (She leaps onto his back) I wish I had the guts to leave. That’s what I really wish.

WOMAN:
Ready?

MAN:
Ready.
(She leaps from his back, her husband takes her feet and swings her like a wheelbarrow)
I want you off my back.

EMMA:
Hindi ko na kaya Bernardo.
(Kay WOMAN)
Hindi ko na kaya.

LISA:
I can’t take it anymore. I will not.

WOMAN:
(To EMMA and LISA)
You want to stay, stay. You want to leave, leave. I personally couldn’t care less.

MAN:
(To BERNARDO and TOM)
I hate you. I hate you.

BERNARDO:
Wala ikaw lang.

TOM:
We can make this work.

BERNARDO:

EMMA:
Masyado bang mahirap ibigay ang sarili mo?

WOMAN:
No chance.

MAN:
I left. I walked right out. I’m free. Me. I walked out.

LISA:
Huwag na lang. Sige, I will love you forever and ever and ever.

TOM:
Lisa, why don’t you want to listen to me? I’m telling the truth.

WOMAN:
Garbage!

MAN:
Street!

WOMAN:
Words!

MAN:
Words!

WOMAN:
Ready?

MAN:
Ready!
(They leap forward and face the audience with strained smiles.)
My back it hurts.

EMMA:
Masyado na tayong matanda para rito.

LISA:
We’re growing up too fast, Tom.

TOM:
Lisa, believe me.

LISA:
I said I was going to love you forever. Isn’t that enough?

TOM:
No. I want the truth. Do you believe, Lisa, I’m not just a walking cock.

EMMA:
Sige. Kakalimutan ko na ang lahat.

BERNARDO:
Talaga.

EMMA:
Hindi ko na kayang makipagtalo. Masyado na tayong matanda.

WOMAN:
Age.

MAN:
I’m young, woman. Bitch. Rotten bitch. Rotten-bitch-woman. I’m young.

TOM:
I can’t grow up for you if you want. I’ll see sex as something so immature. I won’t touch you. Touching you is not worth it if I love you. Something is always better than everything.

WOMAN:
Smile face-front. Dead slow. Touch your toes. It’ll unlock. Smile.

(MAN follows her instructions.)

WOMAN:
It unlocked.

EMMA:
Tama na. Maghuhugas pa ako ng plato. Ayaw ko nang makipag-away.

BERNARDO:
Tutulungan na kita.

EMMA:
Sige.

TOM:
I’ll stop for you.

LISA:
Ok.

TOM:
Really?

WOMAN:
Don’t be ridiculous.

MAN:
Pull them up. They’re sagging way the hell down too. Awful to look at those two sagging glands. Not bad at all. It’s a sad sad sag. Ma’am—short for mammary. WOMAN-mom.

WOMAN:
Bastard!
(Wrestles her husband)

TOM, BERNARDO:
I love you.

MAN:
Saggy.

WOMAN:
Bad-back.

EMMA, LISA:
I love you.

WOMAN:
Crack back. Crack back out of whack.

TOM, BERNARDO:
I will always love you.

MAN:
Whack this, woman. You’re a man. A wrestling man.

EMMA, LISA:
I will always love you.

MAN:
The same age, woman. Precisely and exactly the same goddamn age.

WOMAN:
Perform.

MAN:
Well as ever.

WOMAN:
Bad locks.

TOM:
What do we do now?

MAN:
Sack sag.

LISA:
I don’t know.

WOMAN:
There’s still time.

BERNARDO:
Paabot ng Liquid Sossa.

MAN:
Goddamn right.

LISA:
Ito.

WOMAN:
For what?

MAN:
“For what?” What?

WOMAN:
For what? Time? For what?

BERNARDO, LISA, TOM, EMMA:
Mahal na mahal kita.

MAN:
Can we stop.

WOMAN:
What? Stop what?

MAN:
The wrestling.

TOM:
You sure about leaving me.

BERNARDO:
Sigurado kang okay lang sa ‘yo.

(After a long silence.)

WOMAN:
Yes. Tonight. Tonight we can stop.

MAN:
Are you sure… Are you sure you don’t just say tonight and not really mean “tonight”?

WOMAN:
(with quiet dignity, resignation)
I’m sure I mean tonight. It’s clear enough. Tonight.

MAN:
Never to wrestle again then? Tonight then? Never?

EMMA:
Oo. Okay lang ako.

LISA:
I won’t leave you.

WOMAN:
Never.

MAN:
You’re not frightened to end it?

WOMAN:
The wrestling?

MAN:
The wrestling. The balance. That too.

WOMAN:
Frightened? No, no, I’m not frightened.

TOM:
I’ll never get you into trouble again.

BERNARDO:
Hindi na ako iinom.

TOM, BERNARDO:
Pangako.

MAN:
End it?

WOMAN:
End it. Finish. Yes, that too.

LISA, EMMA:
Salamat.

TOM:
Tara?

BERNARDO:
May luha ka sa pisngi mo.

MAN:
Certain?

LISA:
Tara na.

EMMA:
(Walang pakialam)
Hindi ko alam.

WOMAN:
Yes, I’m certain.

MAN:
Ready. Tonight then.

(They do a trick.)

WOMAN:
This is the last time.

MAN:
Make it good then. If we can, make it good.

WOMAN:
READY.

MAN:
I don’t need you.

WOMAN:
I hate you.
(A dance of death)

MAN:
Please.

TOM:
You’re beautiful.

WOMAN:
Stop.

EMMA:
Luha lang yan.

MAN:
God, oh God.

WOMAN:
Oh my God.

MAN:
Please.

WOMAN:
Please.

EMMA:
Huwag mo na ako alalahanin. Luha lang yan.

LISA:
Let’s go. Pagod na ako.

MAN:
WOMAN! WOMAN! (WOMAN falls)

TOM, BERNARDO, LISA, EMMA:
Ano yun?

MAN:
WOMAN!

(He goes down slowly. Everyone stops and watches the MAN.)

MAN:
You’re still alive?

WOMAN:
Yes.

MAN:
We?

(Each look to their lovers.)

(Black out.)

(Enter lights.)

(The dance done in the beginning repeats itself.)

(It never ends, this love that falls.)

END
